Obstacles Can Make You An Innovator

Hundreds of thousands of years ago, human beings discovered how to make fire so they could keep warm, cook and stay up later. Hundreds of years ago, steam engines were invented so they could produce large volumes of merchandise. A few decades ago, computers were created so they could process information dramatically quickly. People have been innovating since the dawn of time, but how do they come up with a new idea? One of the hints is being out of the comfort zone.

The ‘comfort zone’ is a psycological state in which you feel relaxed and at ease under a low mental pressure. For example, when you do something you get used to, such as cooking the same kinds of dishes, going to school by your regular route, you don’t feel so much stress. Being in your comfort zone seems an exellent way to spend your time in fun and happiness. However, in terms of your performance management, it is not always efficient. According to research, if you are always in your comfort zone—in other words if you do your routine tasks every day—your productivity goes down. On the other hand, if you get out of your comfort zone to some degree, you can improve yourself. Even some anxiety or difficulties can help you become more inspired, more motivated, and even more creative. It shows that you should not hesitate to try new experiences. So if you want to change yourself, you should get out of your comfort zone right now.

Nike is the world’s biggest brand providing sportswear and accessories year-round. The designers are required to create something new all the time. But how do they keep themselves creative? One thing is certain: they get out of their comfort zones. “The designers of Nike sometimes have an unusual trip called Innovation Trip,” says one of the designers of Nike. “One time when we travelled to a tropical island, we swam with sharks!” It might sound very scary, but those different experiences in uncomfortable environments can give them new ideas and inspiration. So they always try something different, something new, or something even crazy. Some people like to stay at home and relax, doing nothing. Nevertheless, you might be able to change your mindset by putting yourself in a place that might be a little distressing!

During my stay in Portland, Oregon, I had an opportunity to join Creative Mornings, a seminar held every month for people who want to spice up their work lives. The speaker was Allyn K. Robinson, who is the Content Producer for Design Culture at Nike HQ. Having worked at the company’s Blue Ribbon Studio (a world-class maker space recently profiled in Vogue and The New York Times) for four years, she is charged with driving the culture of the creative community and helping inspire and unite the 700+ designers throughout the organization. Her résumé sports an exellent career, however, one year ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Even after several rounds of surgery, she said, "I fell in love with cancer." By surviving a painfully tough time, she could understand her family and friends better than before, and she could see the world from a different perspective. After all, she became inspired even during her battle with the disease.

We should think of our obstacles as positively as possible and try everything. Do not be afraid of being out of your comfort zone. Sometimes, you might have to take a risk. However, it's a chance for you to let yourself into a higher level. If you feel things are too easy or you are bored of your life, step forward into unchartered territory. You'll be more powerful, have a more open mind, and be more creative.
