Winter is Coming: Cover Up!

The nights are getting longer and the days are getting colder. If you are furry and feral, you might want to think about hibernating! Otherwise, you'd better start buying the kind of clothes you might wear on an expedition to the Antarctic.

But seriously, winter is no laughing matter. If you think the fall is cold now, you will have quite a shock when it gets really cold.

According to Wikipedia, "The average January maximum is −1 °C [Yes, that's a minus sign!] (30 °F) in the city. There are usually a few cold snaps where temperatures remain below −10 °C (14 °F) and less frequently below −20 °C (−4 °F), with windchills making it feel like -30 (-22). The coldest temperature recorded was −31.3 °C (−24.3 °F) on January 4, 1981, and the coldest windchill recorded was -44.7 (-48.5) on the same day."

Most students don't want to spend a fortune on clothes they are only going to need in Canada (and probably never again). So, here are some options.

WHAT TO BUY

Click here to see a video we made in English through Journalism in 2007 about what to wear in winter. It gives you advice on different options for how to stay warm/alive.

WHERE TO BUY IT

Buy quality

Mountain Equipment Co-op (400 King Street West) is a is a consumers' cooperative, which sells outdoor clothing and is notable for its commitment to environmental protection and other causes. As a co-op, MEC sells only to customers who hold a lifetime membership, which you can buy for $5.

Buy cheap

Value Village (Click here for locations near you) is a thrift store, selling used clothes (and other items) at very low prices. You are bound to find winter clothing at a cost that won't bankrupt you.
